National education policy 2020 in India


 History of NEP 2020


Since the countries independence in  1947, Indian government introduced various program and changes in Indian education system. Following is the small history of Indian education policies...,


1. 1st NEP 1968- On the recommendation of Kothari commission (1964-1966), prime minister Indira Gandi announced the first national education policy in 1968. The main agenda of this policy was to fulfilling compulsory education for all children up to the age of 14. Three language formula was firstly implemented in this NEP.


2. 2nd NEP 1986-In 1986, the government led by Rajiv Gandhi introduced a new National Policy on Education. The NEP called for a "child centred approach" in primary education, and launched "operation blackboard" to improve primary schools nationwide.


Modification- The NEP 1986 modified in 1992in P.V.Narsinhrao government. Under the NPE 1986 envisaged to conduct of common entrance examination on all India basis for admission to professional and technical programmes in the country.


2014 BJP manifesto- The new education policy was in manifesto of 2014 BJP election. 


In 2015 when Smriti Irani  was HRD minister one committee was set up for NEP, lead by Mr TSR Subrahmanyam. Report was submitted on 7th may 2016. Main objective of this committee as to improve the Quality of education, Credibility of education , Addressing the gaps in implementation. In oct2016 this draft policy get releases by HRD ministry and forwarded for suggestions. But this recommendation gets fail.


New Committee was formed- In 2019 new committee was formed made up of 9 members. Headed by former isro chief Dr K. Kasturirangan. They drafted the national education policy. This finally geted pass in 2020. 


Most Important Changes In The New NEP 2020

1. HRD ministry now renamed as ministry of education. 

2. GDP investment in education to increased from 1.6% to 6%.

3. Focusing on gross enrolment ratio it will be increased to 50% by 2035.

This changes only occurs when we brought dynamic change in existing approach.


Changes In School Pattern

10+2 pattern will be change into 5+3+3+4.

(3-6) years= Preschool.

(6-8) years= Class 1 and 2.   

(8-11) years= Class 3 to 5.

(11-14) years= Class 6 to 8.

(14-16) years= Class 9 to 12.


Changes In Pre-school pattern.

Student to learn coading from the age of 6.

Mother tongue to be a medium of instruction till 5th grade.

Report card will be comprehensive based on skill plus capabilities.


Changes In Higher Education.

Single regulator for higher education.(excluding medical and legal).

M-phil to be discontinued.

Public investment in education to reach 6% of GDP at the earliest.


Other Changes

On the level of IIT and IIM,  Multidisciplinary education and  research universities will be framed.

To include research culture in higher education, National Research formation will be framed as apex bodies.


Objective Of NEP

Universalization of education, achieving global standard of education.

There will lie no difference between private and government education.
